Great Nevada ShakeOut

Seismograph drawing waves from an earthquake

Join WNC and the rest of the Nevada System of Higher Education for the Great Nevada ShakeOut on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 10:15 AM.

Why it matters

Nevada is in Earthquake Country. Our State is the third most seismically active state in the U.S., which means that knowing how to protect yourself is essential. Whether you are in class, at work, or in the dorms, this is your chance to practice the simple actions that can save lives.

What to Expect:

At 10:15 AM, an earthquake alert will go out across campus. That is your cue to practice the lifesaving steps:

  • DROP to the ground
  • COVER your head and neck (and get under a sturdy desk or table if possible)
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops. Practice for 2 minutes.
  • ADAPT if needed:
With a cane: Drop or sit on a chair or bed, cover your head, keep your cane nearby
In a wheelchair: Lock your wheels, bend forward, and cover your head and neck
No cover available: Move next to an interior wall, crouch down, and protect your head and neck
