The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office provides proactive service and assistance to maintain safe and healthy campuses. From injury prevention programs to audits and inspections, EHS can provide training and consultative assistance on a wide range of issues concerning safety and wellness for staff and students alike.

Audits and Inspections

EHS audits and inspections are a valuable leading indicator tool to assess the safety risks in your area and allow for a proactive approach to safety and compliance. EHS staff conduct frequent informal inspections of laboratories, shops, and mechanical spaces to ensure safe operations.

Training

Training is a vital component of maintaining a safe and healthy campus, and is often required by law. It is everyones responsibility to understand and follow the laws that govern the work that we perform. Contact us to provide training for your department, or to develop training programs for you.

WNC can provide a variety of safety consultation services. Whether you need a one on one consult regarding the safety concerns of an employee, or you require a thorough review of your departmental programs and procedures, our office can provide the resources to meet your needs with minimal disruption to your normal operations.

Defensive Driving Requirement

In accordance with the State Administrative Manual Section 0521.0 employees who drive state-owned vehicles may be required to participate in an approved Initial Defensive Driving class with 4-hours of contact time and refresh once every four years or subsequent to an at fault accident if recommended by an accident review committee. If you have never taken the 4-hour initial course, you should plan to take a Nevada-approved Defensive Driver class within your 1st year of utilizing state-owned vehicles.

Initial classes are offered by the Nevada Department of Risk Management (NVApps.state.nv.us), Nevada Safety Consulting and Training Division of NV OSHA (4safenv.state.nv.us), the National Safety Council (www.nsc.org), University of Nevada, Western Nevada College, and others. Email EHS@wnc.edu for a transcript review, course availability, or any other questions.

New in 2020, EH&S has partnered with Continuing Education and All Star Driver Education to provide an inexpensive online option with the required 4+ hours of contact time.

Defensive Driving Regular Class (4 contact hours)

Defensive driving classes are offered by the Nevada Department of Risk Management , Nevada SCATS, National Safety Council, University of Nevada, Western Nevada College, and others.

New in 2020, EH&S has partnered with Continuing Education and All-Star Driver Education to provide an approved online option with the required 4+ hours of contact time.

WNC Continuing Education Online 4+ hour DD / 5 hour Traffic Safety Course Instructions

1. Select the following Link: WNC Continuing Education 4+ hour DD Online Course (this redirects to All-Star Driver Education)
2. Create your account following the on-screen prompts.
3. To pay for the course, click Pay Now! to pay online, call (800) 967-7719 to pay over the phone, or mail a check or money order to All Star Online Driver Education, 75 Aprill Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. It is a business expense, so follow department procedures regarding payment or reimbursement. A portion of this fee is returned to WNC Continuing Education.
4. Once you have paid for the course, click on Classes and complete the 11 modules and final exam. You will receive an e-mail from All Star Driver Education with the subject line, Course Completed!
5. Forward proof of completion to the EH&S department and review the updated Acknowledgement of State Vehicle Use Rules

Note: You do not need to complete the notarized statement or return the forms to the All Star Driver Education office as instructed in the e-mail in order to be approved to drive a state-owned vehicle. However, you may do so if you would like the completion of the course reported to the Nevada DMV this could result in the removal of up to 3 points from your driving record.

Defensive Driving Refresher Class (about 1 hour)

Online defensive driving refresher classes are readily available from many sources. A refresher must be taken once every four years . A refresher course may also be used as an orientation until a full 4-hour course can be scheduled.

NSHE Risk Management Online Defensive Driver Orientation/Refresher

1. Select the following link: NSHE Online Defensive Driver Refresher
2. Enter Course ID: This will be provided to you by EH&S.
3. Enter Student Number: This is your Employee ID Number.
4. Enter your first and last name as they should appear on your completion certificate.
5. Launch Course. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass this course.
6. Forward proof of completion to the EH&S department and review the updated Acknowledgement of State Vehicle Use Rules.
