Jun 10, 2025

Western Nevada College Professor of Geosciences Dr. Winnie Kortemeier presented her Lake Tahoe research findings at the Geological Society of America’s annual meeting on Sept. 23 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.
Western Nevada College Professor of Geosciences Dr. Winnie Kortemeier is taking her presentation detailing her 2024 discovery that Lake Tahoe is North America's oldest permanent freshwater lake home to “Big Blue”.
Kortemeier’s talk, “Lake Tahoe: The Science and the Hype of Being North America’s Oldest Lake,” is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Advance tickets cost $10 through EventBrite and are free for students with a student ID. Tickets are $15 at the door.
“I love Lake Tahoe,” Dr. Kortemeier said. “I take students up there every semester on field trips, and I do like sharing what I know about it.”
Through radiometric dating of rocks and examining the basalt that has interacted with the water of Tahoe during her 20 years of Lake Tahoe research, Dr. Kortemeier determined that “Big Blue” is at least 2.3 million years old.
“We are extremely proud of Dr. Kortemeier and her research,” said WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe. “She's a great role model for our students and brings a variety of real-world experiences to them in the classroom.”
