One of the year’s most spectacular celestial events is about to light up the Northern Nevada sky, and Western Nevada College's Jack C. Davis Observatory invites the community to experience it under ideal viewing conditions.

The observatory will welcome visitors on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 12, through the early morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 13, for the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, one of the most anticipated astronomical events of the year.

Located at 2269 Vanpatten Ave. on the eastern slopes of the Sierra, the Jack C. Davis Observatory offers darker skies than much of Carson City, making it one of the area's premier locations for meteor watching. This year's shower coincides with a new Moon, creating exceptionally dark skies that will allow meteors to shine at their brightest.

Under ideal conditions, observers may see 50 to 100 meteors per hour, including brilliant fireballs streaking across the sky.

The observatory opens at 6:30 p.m., although visitors are encouraged to arrive after darkness falls for the best viewing. Staff members and volunteers from the Western Nevada Astronomical Society will be available throughout the evening to answer questions, guide visitors through the night sky and operate the observatory’s high-powered telescopes.

While the meteors will be the night’s main attraction, guests will also have opportunities to observe planets, stars and other celestial objects through the observatory’s telescopes as conditions permit.

Because meteor watching requires looking across wide sections of the sky, visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to comfortably recline while watching overhead. Dressing in layers is also recommended, as temperatures can cool considerably after sunset.

Admission is free, and visitors are welcome to stay as long as they wish throughout the night.
