Graduates leave with an in-demand certificate and the skills to help people cut through red tape and access the resources that improve their health and well-being.
Western Nevada College Continuing Education is proud to announce the launch of a new 8-week Community Health Worker (CHW) training program beginning Oct. 1. Designed to be both affordable and accessible, this program provides a low-barrier entry point into the healthcare field — no prior healthcare experience required.
The 40-hour certification course prepares students to become Community Health Workers in Nevada. Graduates leave with an in-demand certificate and the skills to help people cut through red tape and access the resources that improve their health and well-being.
“Western Nevada College is committed to providing high-quality workforce training that meets the needs of both our students and our communities,” said WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe. “This new Community Health Worker program not only prepares individuals for meaningful careers but also strengthens healthcare access across our region.”
The course follows nationally recognized C3 Council standards and is the only weekly in-person CHW training offered in Northern Nevada. Community Health Workers are in demand across clinics, public health programs, schools and justice system services — and their work is recognized and supported by Medicaid, Medicare, and other agencies.
“Community Health Workers are what I call the ‘then what’ professionals,” said Jay Kolbet-Clausell, program instructor. “When a doctor tells a patient they need to eat healthier or manage stress and it isn’t happening, the CHW steps in to provide practical, hands-on support. In my classroom, students practice patient navigation, health coaching and community resource mapping — the exact skills they’ll need to bridge the gap between a diagnosis and living well.”
Classes meet for eight weeks on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at WNC. Upon successful completion, graduates will be eligible to apply for certification as a Community Health Worker in Nevada.
To ensure cost is not a barrier, financial assistance is available through EmployNV, and the program is listed on the Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL).
“If you’re looking for a meaningful, entry-level healthcare role with room to grow, this program is a great place to start,” said Lauren Slemenda Moore, Continuing Education Manager at Western Nevada College. “We’re excited to welcome our first group of students this fall.”
