WNC Geology Club Fundraiser Seeks ‘Cozy Homes’ for Rock Samples for Holidays
Nov 18, 2025

The Geology Club's annual Rock, Mineral and Fossil Sale is known to provide excellent holiday gifts.
Support the Western Nevada College Geology Club’s scholarship fundraising efforts by attending the annual Rock, Mineral and Fossil Sale on Friday, Dec. 5, in Room 322 of the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City campus.
“Events like the Rock, Mineral and Fossil Sale highlight the passion and dedication of our students and faculty in the geosciences," said WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe. "The hands-on learning opportunities they create not only spark curiosity but also help fund meaningful scholarships that support future scientists. I’m proud of the Geology Club and Dr. Kortemeier for their commitment to education, community engagement and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world.”
WNC Professor of Geosciences Dr. Winnie Kortemeier said the sale, which runs from 2 to 6 p.m., is important to the club to support an endowed scholarship for students interested in the Geosciences.
“We have rock, mineral, fossil, gem and shell specimens from all over the western U.S.,” said Professor Kortemeier, club adviser, who estimates that more than 1,000 samples will be part of the sale.
Dr. Kortemeier recommends attendees come early in order to have the best selection of samples. "We will have the ability to take credit cards this year, and cash is always accepted.
"We're just trying to find nice, cozy homes for all of these samples that have nowhere to go for the holidays," she quipped.
