In Case You Missed the Solar Eclipse

Oct 16, 2023

In case you missed the annular solar eclipse on Oct. 14, Dr. Thomas Herring, director of Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College, has you covered.

Dr. Herring attended a viewing event hosted by Dr. Milinda Wasala of Great Basin College in Elko. Dr. Herring captured incredible photos with a Nikon DSLR camera on the back of the observatory's Coronado Solarmax 90 H-alpha solar telescope. He said the images contain prominences on the limb (edge) of the Sun, which are signs of the Sun ejecting material into space.

If you missed the solar eclipse, you'll have to wait until Aug. 12, 2045, for a total solar eclipse in this area, with Reno scheduled to be just inside the viewing path.
