Former WWE Star to Speak at WNC CREST Event on Aug. 8

Jul 25, 2023

Motivational speakers don’t usually come as adversity tested as Zach Gowen.

Gowen experienced painful losses early in his life and nearly succumbed to drugs as a young adult.

As a survivor and someone who nearly lost everything, Gowen persevered and became an inspirational sensation as a professional wrestler, building an enormous following on social media and in the WWE ring.

When his flame burned out in wrestling, Gowen turned to sharing his message with children and young adults nationwide.

Gowen will visit Western Nevada College on Tuesday, Aug. 8, for a motivational and interactive presentation to the College Education for Students in Transition (CREST) program. The 9 to 11 a.m. event titled “Don’t Quit Your Daydream” in Carson Nugget Hall is presented by WNC Disability Support Services and the Diversion, Equity and Inclusion Committee.

“Unbelievable!” said Leroy High School (N.Y.) Principal Tim McCardle. “I would bring him back every year if I could. His message really hits home. There are so many tough things out there now for our students to have to face and Zach’s gone through them all. It’s great to see him triumph in his life and to give back.”

Some of the pain and obstacles that Gowen overcame as a child were losing his dad and his left leg to cancer before he was 9 years old. At the height of his professional wrestling fame, Gowen battled John Cena, The Big Show, Brock Lesnar and Vince McMahon.

Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation (DETR-VR) is co-sponsoring the event.

Attendees are advised to RSVP, as seating will be limited. RSVP by Aug. 4 to Susan Trist at 775-445-4459 or susan.trist@wnc.edu. Light refreshments will be served.
