Community Hero Professor Mayo to be Honored at Aces' Game on Aug. 11

Aug 10, 2023

Greater Nevada Credit Union is recognizing two Western Nevada College employees as Community Heroes this summer.

The first of the two honorees is Mathematics Professor Tim Mayo. He will be honored by GNCU at the Reno Aces’ game against the Salt Lake Bees at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Greater Nevada Field.

“I am deeply honored by the GNCU recognition,” Mayo said. "The people are what make WNC a great place to teach. WNC has the greatest people with whom I have ever worked in my entire teaching career — both students and faculty. We all work together to make it a great place of learning!”

Mayo will receive four tickets to the game in special hero seating, a custom jersey and in-game recognition.

Mayo began teaching Mathematics and Statistics classes at WNC Fallon in 2018 and became tenured in 2022. He said his tenure appointment was the capstone of his professional career and an unparalleled lifetime achievement. He received the Faculty of the Year Award from ASWN in his first year of teaching as well.

“Tim's focus on great teaching and serving our students blends exceptionally well with the mission of WNC. Tim cares a great deal about people and changing lives through the power of education,” said WNC Liberal Arts Academic Director Scott Morrison.

The professor has served as President of the Nevada Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

In all, Mayo has instructed community college students for 20-plus years and secondary education students for seven. Mayo received his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, his Master of Arts degree from the University of Missouri and his Master of Science degree from California State University-Hayward.

Notably, Mayo served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for more than 20 years. He was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004.

GNCU is celebrating incredible local heroes who support Northern Nevada communities and are employed in education, first response, law enforcement, health care and the military.

Congratulations, Community Hero Tim Mayo!
