Impressive Altars Bring Dia de los Muertos to Life

Nov 5, 2020

COVID brought about some changes to the 2020 Dia de los Muertos Celebration, but the heart of the event remained.

Latino Leadership Academy Coordinator Lupe Ramirez served students and staff Mexican pan bread and hot chocolate on Nov. 2.

Unlike many other events in 2020, Dia de los Muertos still went on, providing individuals the opportunity to honor deceased loved ones and their heroes by creating an altar including their pictures and favorite foods. But like many events in 2020, COVID restrictions and guidelines prevented the dancing, games and socializing that normally are part of Day of the Dead celebration.
Students from the Western Nevada College Latino Leadership Academy and the Associated Students of Western Nevada presented the fifth annual event from Nov. 2-6. Altars were on display all week in the Hallway Art Gallery in the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City campus and at Virgil Getto Hall lobby on the Fallon campus. The Latino Outreach staff invited campus departments and student organizations to participate in the celebration by creating their own altars.
Prizes were awarded to creators of the top 3 altars. Berenice captured first place and the top prize of lunch, second place went to Flor and Angelica (WNC apparel) and third place was awarded to the Information Desk (donuts and coffee).
Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the students and staff who participated in the altar contest! Ramirez said. On behalf of the students from the Latino Leadership Academy and the students from Associated Students of Western Nevada, thank you all for supporting this event!
