WNC Celebrates First Cohort of Community Health Workers; New Session Begins March 4 with Funding Available

Dec 8, 2025

Western Nevada College Continuing Education proudly announces the graduation of its first-ever Community Health Worker (CHW) cohort, with 13 employment-ready students completing the 40-hour training program.

The program equips students with essential skills in health system navigation, communication, cultural responsiveness and resource coordination — preparing them for immediate roles in healthcare, social services, nonprofits and community-based organizations.

The impact of the program is already being felt in the community. Two students from the inaugural class, Marisol Espinoza and Javier Torres, were so inspired by what they learned that they organized a Veterans Day Community Resource Fair just weeks after beginning their training. The event brought together local veteran-owned businesses, resource providers, raffles and free meals for veterans. More than 300 people were served, and local veterans were connected with vital services and community support — an example of the program’s mission in action.

WNC’s next CHW cohort begins March 4, with classes scheduled on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to support working adults. Sessions are planned in both Carson City and Fallon for the spring semester. Students may also qualify for full tuition coverage and course-related assistance through the ROADS Program, removing financial barriers for those pursuing this in-demand career path. CHWs are trusted connectors within their communities,” said WNC Continuing Education Manager Lauren Slemenda Moore. “They help individuals access health and social services, navigate complex systems and overcome barriers to care — ultimately improving outcomes for Nevada families and strengthening community well-being.”
