Credit by Examination

Students can demonstrate knowledge through nationally recognized exams, including AP, CLEP and IB, or institutional Challenge Exams evaluated by academic faculty.

Credit earned by examination may not apply toward satisfying the minimum on-campus resident credit requirements.

Students that have not been admitted to WNC will first need to complete the WNC Application for Admission before credit can be evaluated and applied.

Credit for Nationally Recognized Exams

Credit may be granted for the satisfactory completion of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) general examinations with a score of 50 or above.

In order for credit to be applied to the student’s account, students must request that the College Board send an official CLEP score report directly to WNC Admissions & Records.

  • IB Exams (International Baccalaureate Exams)

Credit may be granted for the satisfactory completion of the International Baccalaureate Exams (IB Exams) with a score of 4 or higher on the IB higher-level examination and a score of 5 or higher on the IB standard-level examination.

In order for credit to be applied to the student’s account, students must request that their IB Programme transcripts be sent directly to WNC Admissions & Records.

Other national testing organizations may be considered.  Students should contact Admissions and Records.

Credit by Challenge Examination

Current WNC students may be eligible to earn credit by successfully completing a challenge examination for certain courses. Challenge examinations are offered only with the required approvals and are not available for all courses.  WNC reserves the right to deny any request for Challenge Examination.

How to Request a Challenge Examination

Students should first review the policies associated with credit for prior learning. Students who believe they might qualify should:

  1. Reach out to Admissions and Records to request a challenge examination. admissions.records@wnc.edu
  2. Admissions and Records will connect the student to the appropriate academic division/faculty.
  3. Student should speak with a full-time instructor in the appropriate subject area and fill out the Challenge Examination Request Form. If a full-time instructor is unavailable, a part-time instructor may be authorized to administer the exam with approval from the division director.
  4. If the instructor approval is obtained, students must submit the signed form to Admissions and Records.
  5. If approved by Admissions and Records, students must pay the required challenge examination fee at the Cashier's Office and submit the payment receipt and completed Challenge Examination Request Form to Admissions & Records.
  6. The instructor will then be able to administer the exam.  It is the students responsibility to work with the instructor to schedule the exam.
  7. The student will have until the end of the semester in which the challenge exam is requested to complete the exam.
  8. Once the examination is complete, the instructor will forward the exam with results to Admissions and Records for final processing.

Students are responsible for obtaining all required approvals, arranging to complete the exam with the instructor, and requesting the official score be posted on the challenge exam form and sent to Admissions and Records for final processing.

Examples of Challenge Examinations

Below is a list of previously conducted challenge examinations.  Students can also request to challenge courses not included below.

The ability to offer a challenge exam for a course is dependent on faculty availability.  WNC reserves the right to deny any request for challenge examination credit.
