JCDO Celebrates Summer Solstice with Community
Jun 22, 2023
JCDO Director Dr. Thomas Herring and Physics Instructor Gary Swift assisted community members in viewing sunspots and learning more about the Sun on Summer Solstice day.
Jack C. Davis Observatory, located above Western Nevada College, celebrated the longest
daylight day of the year by inviting the community for a sunspot viewing event on
Wednesday, June 21.
Attendees viewed the Sun with several telescopes and learned more about the solstice and analemma patterns on observatory's deck from Director Dr. Thomas Herring and Physics Instructor Gary Swift.
Dr. Herring captured an enlightening photo of the Sun through the observatory's H-alpha-filtered solar telescope, noting the considerable prominence on the bottom side of the image.
The material jutting off the Sun's surface is much longer than the Earth's width, Dr. Herring pointed out.
