WNC to Participate in the 2024 Great Nevada ShakeOut
Oct 1, 2024
Western Nevada College is proud to announce its participation in the annual Great Nevada ShakeOut on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 10:17 a.m. This statewide earthquake drill is part of a broader international effort to promote earthquake readiness and safety.
As part of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), WNC will join other NSHE institutions in this important event, which provides an essential opportunity for students, faculty and staff to practice life-saving actions in the event of an earthquake.
Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the United States, making earthquake preparedness critical for our campus community.
What to Expect During the Drill:
At exactly 10:17 a.m. on Oct. 17, WNC will send an earthquake alert through its campus-wide
emergency communication system. All participants will be instructed to immediately
"Drop, Cover and Hold On."
How to Participate:
- DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you).
- COVER your head and neck with your arms and, if possible, take shelter under a sturdy desk or table.
- HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
If no shelter is nearby, move next to an interior wall, crouch and cover your head and neck with your hands.
WNC encourages everyone — whether on campus or at home — to participate in this drill and enhance personal and organizational earthquake preparedness.
