Statement: A student has the right to activate the grade appeal process for him/herself when s/he believes that the grade s/he received for a course is incorrect.

Section 1: Activation


  1. Prior to activation of the formal grade appeal process it is recommended that the student discuss his/her complaint with the faculty member who issued the grade to attempt an informal resolution.

Section 2: Written Notice


  1. If the student cannot reach the faculty member or if a resolution is not reached, the student must file a written notice to appeal the grade with the appropriate Academic Director within 25 business days of the published date for grade to be posted for full-term classes, or within 25 business days after the last class date for short-term classes. The Director will determine if a meeting between the student and the faculty member is recommended and will set up such a meeting if warranted.

Section 3: Unresolved Grade Appeal


  1. If the grade appeal is still unresolved, the student must submit details in writing to the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs within 10 business days of the meeting with the Academic Director and faculty member or within 10 business days of written notice from the Academic Director that a meeting is not warranted.
  2. The vice president in return will notify the faculty member, student, Academic Director and the Student Relations Officer by (or by WNC email of the formal grade appeal.

Section 4: Hearing Committee


  1. Within 25 business days of the receipt of the written certified letter, the Student Relations Officer will arrange for a Student hearing Committee to meet to hear the grade appeal; every effort will be made to schedule the hearing as soon as possible. The Committee will consist of a minimum of two (2) faculty members and one student. will meet to hear the grade appeal.
  2. The faculty member and the student who is appealing his/her grade will be invited to present their case during the Student Hearing Committee meeting.
  3. Hearings shall be recorded and maintained for a five-year time-period.

Section 5: Final Action on Grade Appeal


  1. The written recommendation of the Student Hearing Committee will be forwarded to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs who will act on the grade appeal within 20 business days of being notified.
