To our DACA and Undocumented Students and their Families:

Understandably, this is a very unsettling time for our Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) students and their families as they await a decision by the United States Supreme Court concerning this program that has benefited so many Dreamers.

We encourage our DACA students to submit applications to renew their DACA status now please do not wait for a Supreme Court decision to be made. This means those who currently have a two-year DACA status that will expire and also those who had DACA status previously should take steps to renew their status.

Western Nevada College is offering a number of resources to help DACA/undocumented students and their families understand this process and continue their educational goals:

LATINO LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

The LLA, formerly the Latino Cohort, offers individual guidance and support to first-generation Latinos. One of the benefits students and their families receive is guidance in navigating the educational system. Students learn together how to use the resources that are available to all students. They receive assistance to apply for funding to pay for their education, as well as additional support to ensure they complete a degree in a timely manner. Additionally, members of the program gain leadership skills and opportunities to volunteer in their community. They also establish relationships with their peers, instructors, administrators and WNC staff. The program offers a free space for a confidential dialog for DACA and undocumented students to address their unique needs.

In times of uncertainty, we ask that you look to us for help. We stand with you, and we are here for you. WNC, along with other institutions from the Nevada System of Higher Education and nationwide, have expressed support for our DACA/undocumented students and have urged Congress to find a solution that will lead to the safety, well-being and security for our immigrant populations who are learning in our country and contributing to the United States economy and for the betterment of our society.
