A special curated exhibition by Frances Melhop and Candace Garlock

(Carson City, NV) A curated show of artwork assembled to pay a tribute to Artists Galen Brown and Jim McCormick will be on display from September 14 to December 16 in the Bristlecone Gallery on the Western Nevada College campus. The exhibition, Layers of Re-iteration: The Long Conversation, features original works by Galen Brown and Jim McCormick alongside new works by artists whose practices have been shaped by their influence.  

Galen Brown was an influential artist in Northern Nevada. Born in Reno, he used drawing as a healing mechanism after a skiing accident. His work has been part of important exhibitions at the Nevada Museum of Art, including Tilting the Basin in 2016. His work has been accepted in the permanent collections of Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Museum of Art. In 2017, his work was acknowledged with the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation artist’s award.

Jim McCormick moved to Reno in 1960 to join the University of Nevada art faculty, teaching printmaking, drawing, visual foundations and papermaking. In 1989, McCormick was honored with the University of Nevada’s Distinguished Teacher Award. Following his 1992 retirement, he was the recipient of the UNR Distinguished Faculty Award in 1998. Immersing himself as a leader in the arts community, he served over 17 years on the Nevada Arts Council. His work could be seen in several group exhibitions across the country, and individual shows at Sierra Arts, Stremmel Gallery, and Nevada Museum of Art.

This group exhibit was the work of the Printmakers' Conspiracy, and their expanded community,  an active regional arts collective based in Reno, Nevada, organized by artists Candace Garlock, Jim McCormick and Nolan Preece. The group brings together local printmakers of all skill levels to build community, share techniques, and hold collaborative exhibitions across the region continuing the encouragement of artists to inspire and support one another.

The exhibit’s artwork from artists include Galen Brown, Jim McCormick, Anne M. Hoff, Marti Bein, Bobbie Ann Howell, Candace Garlock, Carole-Ann Ricketts, Frances Melhop, Lynn Schmidt, Nolan Preece, and Rachel Stiff.

 Curator Frances Melhop describes the exhibit’s mission to continue the conversation of the mentor/mentee relationship which continues past their time. Artists remain inspired in new and unique ways, long after the lives of key individuals that helped to shape the artistic community. The exhibition was first assembled and shown in Sierra Arts Gallery and a book was published for it.

An artists’ reception will be held on September 24, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
